Nearly everyone already has digital TV

According to figures that were recently released by Ofcom, nearly 90% of all households across the UK have already gone digital, even thought the official deadline to move from analogue is not until 2012.

Ofcom released a statement Monday that said 89.2% of all households have already made the digital switchover.

Roughly this means three out of every five TVs can receive digital programming, an increase of about 8% from 2008.

Other statistics released from the same study show that people are using DVRs more frequently to watch television shows, with almost 9 million DVR boxes reported to be in circulation.

Additionally, Ofcom said that that there are now 18 million homes equipped with a Freeview device which is an increase of .3 million from last quarter.

Freeview is a service offered to Sky customers which allows views to pick up digital signals.

2.6 million homes that have the device also have digital video recorders from Freeview.

Ofcom also reported that there are an additional 1.2 million boxes from other service providers BT Vision, Top UP TV, and Virgin Media.

Yet, while Freeview boxes have jumped up in sales ratios this quarter, the overall number of 900,000 Freeview boxes sold is actually a decline of 28% from last year, due to the fact integrated TV sets are becoming more popular.

In the last year 12.7m DTT units were purchased which is an increase of about 8.5% from 2007.

Despite these facts, at the end of March 2009 27% of all the television sets found across the UK were still analogue which means that there may still be a large margin of growth for the digital switchover.
