BBC tests HD DVB-T2 for Freeview

The BBC is believed to have started trials of DVB-T2, a high definition technology which could eventually enable Freeview viewers to enjoy shows like Eastenders in HD.

Freeview HD could be rolled out by the end of 2009, if development runs to plan.

DVB-T2 technology allows transmission capacity to be boosted by nearly 30 percent compared with DVB-T, providing a sharper image.

The signal works through a standard aerial and HD set-top box, so there will be no need to buy a satellite dish, although DVB-T2 is not compatible with the current Freeview set-top boxes (STBs), so viewers will need to buy a new STB to use the service.

They will also have to wait until the analogue signal is turned off in their area.

The BBC trial, which was approved by the DVB Project which designed the DVB-T2 specification, is being carried out in south-east England.
