BBC to trial HD successor

The BBC is taking part in trials of a new high definition technology, Super Hi-Vision, which is 16 times the resolution of standard HD.

Super Hi-Vision, or Ultra High Definition (UHD), provides 7680×4320 resolution images and 22.2 channel immersive audio.

The technology has recently taken the step from black and white to colour, with the development of a 33-megapixel image sensor by Japanese public broadcaster Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK).

It has now reached the stage where test transmissions can be carried out, and the BBC, together with NHK of Japan, and RAI of Italy, will show live Super Hi-Vision pictures at the Amsterdam IBC 2008 technology show in September.

At the event SIS Outside Broadcast will feed UHD video over an ultra-broadband fibre connection, and the BBC will demonstrate compression and decompression of Super Hi-Vision using an algorithm they have developed.

The demonstration will include content shot in Japan mixed with live pictures from a camera located in central London.

Potential applications for Super Hi-Vision include large town centre screens for showing sports and cultural events.
