Blu-ray player ownership to soar following HD DVD’s demise

Blu-ray player ownership to soar following HD DVD's demise
A new report from research firm, Strategy Analytics, predicts that 29.4 million households will own a Blu-ray player by the end of 2008, and by 2012 the number will have grown to over 132 million.

It is anticipated that Blu-ray technology will be quickly adopted now that the HD DVD format has been dropped, and more and more people can afford to buy HDTVs as they drop in price.

The report, ‘Blu-ray Devices: Forecasting Sales and Ownership’, was published by Strategy Analytics’ Connected Home Devices division.

It predicts that 18.8 million Blu-ray devices will be sold in 2008. Four million of these will be standalone players, and the Playstation 3 will account for most of the rest.

The Playstation 3 has just been updated to allow it to access enhanced Blu-ray Disc features.

  1. What a load of crap! Is Strategy Analytics owned by Sony or just a made up company name Sony put on the press release?

  2. Hilarious.

Clearly they are desperate to talk up the format.

It’s pretty obvious that, besides the PS3 gang, no-one else is taking an interest in blu-ray.

Anyone into high def is currently hoovering up HD DVD players & movies for pennies.

I don’t know anyone in any rush for this, the Blu-ray prices are way too high and too many people think the benefit does not justify the high Blu-ray hardware & movie costs.

Perhaps when Blu-ray is down to the £100/$200 level with final spec standalone players (no thanks on a game console) people might look again, but I doubt it.

Between cheap regular DVD upscaled & HD TV services (especially with DVR) why on earth would anyone want to pay out a stack of cash on an unfinished format?

If anything HD DVD’s experience shows people the value in waiting some time to see how things work out.

Blu-ray may well have won the battle with HD DVD only to lose the war to something else (DVD).
