Toshiba 37HL67 REGZA 37-inch LCD TV
I believe that everyone of us now knows that the more pixels a television can produce, the more detailed a picture it can display. However, that only happens when you are using top of the line quality electronics such as a capable video processor. Toshiba’s 37HL67 37-inch LCD TV offers a detailed and colorful picture that delivers an immersive viewing experience when displaying HD video. You might try to look for another TV if what you want is a better display for Standard Definition (SD) content, but the 37HL67’s HD quality is one of the best that you couldn’t really care less.
The Toshiba 37HL67 is typically a modern TV. It is very evident in its styling, sporting a glossy black bezel with two fixed bottom-mounted 20-watt speakers concealed behind a thin strip of perforated grille that extends the width of the display. Its features include several SRS Labs’ WOW audio enhancements that add convincing bass and improved positioning.
In addition, this LCD TV weighs in at about 6.3 pounds and comes in with a boomerang-shape stand that has no tilt or swivel motion.
At the rear end of the TV, you will find its connectivity options which include two component-video inputs, a VGA input for PC use, a single RF input for digital cable or broadcast reception, and three HDMI inputs. Three HDMI ports (or more) on a TV are always a welcome sight. The 37HL67’s HDMI connections even accepted 1080p video signals at 24-Hz and 60-Hz refresh rates, which is a surprise as the TV has only half the pixel resolution of a 1080p image.
As for its performance, the TV in itself produces a very good result when configured for dark-room. The 37HL67’s color and grayscale performance was above average compared with most LCD HDTVs out there. The 37HL67’s preset picture modes rendered the darkest portions of the grayscale too bright, but proper black-level and gamma setup (using the TV’s custom picture preset) brought things back into line. Primary and secondary color measurements showed accuracy and saturation almost perfectly aligned with the HD color spec, and grayscale tracking from dark to light intensities was admirably linear, with blue levels showing the most variance at about 5 percent across the scale.
Disappointment, however, comes with SD content. Scenes containing fast motion exhibited significant combing artifacts that appear as thin horizontal lines along the edges of moving objects. The TV left significant flicker artifacts along the edges of objects, indicating that up to half of the video’s potential resolution was being discarded. With scenes containing relatively little motion, though, detail appeared good, and video-noise reduction was effective at default levels.
The Toshiba 37HL67 REGZA LCD TV provides a compelling set of features for the HD enthusiast, including a trio of HDMI inputs, along with impressively accurate and well-saturated color. But its poor processing of standard-definition video is a concern.
