YouTube to offer HD video

YouTube co-founder Steve Chen has confirmed that YouTube is planning to offer HD video.

At the NewTeeVee conference in San Francisco, Chen said that YouTube’s main aim is to ensure that the sites content is available to everyone, including the many people still on slower internet connections who require a fairly low bitrate stream.

However, he confirmed that YouTube is currently testing a player which can check the connection speed and offer high quality video to viewers with a fast enough connection to cope with HD’s much higher bandwith requirement.

The company is currently working to resolve slow buffering times which could discourage viewers from using the site.

YouTube expects to make HD content available within three months.
