LCD and plasma TVs banned in Australia?

Down Under, a Digital CEnergy consultancy firm, has recommended that LCD and Plasma TV should be banned in Australia because of concerns over their energy consumption.

Plasma TVs could be banned by October 2008, while the ban on LCD TVs could come into force in 2011.

Cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs are being phased out in many countries and while plasma and LCD TV use around the same amount of power per square centimetre as CRT sets, much larger screen sizes are possible with the newer technologies.

The large screen displays use more energy than smaller displays.

LCD and plasma TV makers, including Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Panasonic, are working to produce more energy-efficient models.

Sharp’s 8th generation LCD TVs, which are schedule for release in 2008, are designed to use 50 per cent less power than current generation sets.
