JVC demos quadruple HD TV camera

Victor Co of Japan Ltd (JVC) demonstrated a prototype of its ultra-high definition camera for TV and movies at CEATEC, the consumer electronics and IT trade show in Japan.

The 4K camera shoots 30 frames-per-second video at 3840 x 2048 pixels. This gives a total resolution equivalent to four current-generation high-definition screens.

The camera, which weighs a hefty 10kg, is designed for the professional TV market, but could also be used in the movie industry, which has started to use high-resolution systems.

JVC’s camera is accompanied with a 4K projector with a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2400 pixels.

TV stations such as Japan’s public broadcaster, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), are also pushing the development of ultra-high definition systems.

NHK, which was the first broadcaster in the world to start HDTV broadcasting, has developed a system with 4 times its resolution, or 16 times that of current HDTV.
