Intel reveals ‘Canmore’ HDTV chip

Intel’s chief executive, Paul Otellini, has announced the company’s latest move into consumer electronics chips, with a system on a chip codenamed Canmore, aimed at HDTVs and other products.
Speaking at the annual Intel Developer Forum, Otellini revealed that the chip will be rolled out in mid-2008. Intel is also developing its Silverthorne chip, designed for tiny notebooks and portable Internet devices.
Intel is ahead of schedule in reducing the Silverthorne chip’s power consumption, and now expects to achieve a tenfold reduction by next year, instead of the initial target of 2010.
Intel’s previous moves into the market for TV and other consumer electronics have been unsuccessful. With these latest offerings, Intel has another opportunity to diversify into new markets, with a potential large increase in revenues.
