Daewoo DTS-42 Plasma TV

Story link: Daewoo DTS-42 Plasma TV by Franz Bicar

daewoo-dts42-2.jpgIf you are budget conscious but still want to get a Plasma TV, then Daewoo DTS-42 is the right one for you. The DTS-42 is a 42-inch widescreen Plasma TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Although this television cannot truly display high definition signals, it is still compatible with them supporting up to 1080i sources.

The reason why the DTS-42 cannot truly display HD signals is due to the resolution of this model being 852×480, which is not high enough to be classed as HD. The highest definition signals this model supports are 720p (1280 × 720 pixels) and 1080i (1920 × 1080 pixels), although when compared to the DTS-42’s resolution there appears to be a significant difference, it’s good to keep in mind that this model’s image reproduction is comparable to DVD quality and produces very good image reproduction.

The DTS-42 is a revolutionary plasma monitor with an array of compelling features. The DTS-42 utilizes the latest plasma display panel technology with a sophisticated built-in scaler, giving the panel the ability to display high-resolution computer images of up to UXGA (1600 x 1200). In addition to the UXGA scaling ability, the DTS-42 also incorporates an assortment of user-friendly features including 90-degree portrait mode, electronic zoom with adjustable magnification, picture-in-picture, picture freeze, built-in sound system, programmable on-screen display, 530: 1 ratio contrast and a peak brightness rating of 400cd/m2.

The set in itself gives out a fairly acceptable performance. It produces an astoundingly bright picture with 600 candelas per square meter. It has five selectable picture modes for excellent performance in a wide variety of lighting conditions (4:3, 16:9, Panorama, Zoom1, and Zoom2), five sound modes (standard, movie, music, news, and user selectable), and a 3D digital comb filter for enhanced color purity.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you’ve never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (wider, even, than those of most LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor’s slim profile–the DTS-42 is a mere 3.2 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting. Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen).

Its built-in stereo speakers produce 16 watts of power each. It has a good assortment of connectivity options on the back of the set, including a 15-pin PC input, 2 component inputs, 2 component-video inputs, 2 composite A/V inputs, and external speaker outputs.

In addition, the DTS42 comes in a completely metal chassis, making it ideal for public display applications.

In built in to the DTS-42 is a standard definition tuner to use this set with HD signals a seperate tuner is required. This could be a problem for some but cannot be considered a disadvantage since this is not a true HD Plasma and the value for money this model provides makes up for it.

The Daewoo DTS-42 provides good value for money and would make a good addition to any living room, but the biggest drawback of the Daewoo DTS-42 may come from its brand name. Daewoo is relatively unknown and few buyers are willing to buy a products, which give them little confidence in terms of quality and reliability. So this could be partly the reason as to why the majority of buyers choose the similar Samsung SPR4232 over the Daewoo DTS-42.
