LG 42LF66 42-inch HDTV
The LG 42LF66 is another breakthrough by one of TV world’s most prolific brand. This Korean company has given us, once again, a product with top-notch and brilliant quality on par with other sets on the market. The 42LF66 has retained the slim line appearance combined with a glossy black frame and matching pedestal, which is the basic design of the LF66 series high-definition televisions manufactured by LG.
The 42LF66 boasts of a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and is equipped with an 8-bit panel. This is a surprising twist since other LG models integrate the 10-bit panel so as to include the “Wide Colour Gamut” feature. Nevertheless, the LG 42LF66 is still an impressive machine. The (1920 x 1080) resolution is accompanied by a 1:1 pixel mapping. This allows standard or high definition pictures, from as much as 1080i, be mapped pixel by pixel on the screen.
As for connectivity, the 42LF66 sports 2 HDMI inputs (which is usually a standard in most HDTV’s in the market), 2 SCARTS (1 RGB) along with composite, component and s-video inputs. The 42LF66 also sports an enhanced noise reduction function and a Digital Comb Filter along with LG’s patented XD engine.
Designed to enhance the general quality of the viewing experience, LG’s ‘Intelligent Eye’ has been designed to automatically adjust the picture depending upon current lighting conditions.
Simple Link technology (HDMI-CEC) technology allows you to control all LG-compatible equipment through a single remote control.
It is, however, in performance that the LG 42LF66 leaves its mark. When we talk of high definition (HD) displays, LG delivers an excellent level of detail and sharpness. It is outstanding with the 1:1 pixel mapping and is very clear and visible on the large 42-inch screen.

The color performance from the 8-bit panel is commendable too. Although it is not equipped with the 10-bit panel that other LG model sports which adds an extra bit of vibrancy, the 8-bit panel does display realistic colors. It has no difficulty rendering skin tones and different hues of reds and greens. But even though the set gives us good color productions, its the black level renderings that keeps it from being the best. Darker areas show a hint of greyness and even if shadow detail is retained to a certain degree, its still not up to par with other leading sets.
Acoustically, the LG 42LF66 is a solid performer with the twin 10w speakers delivering quite an impressive level of bass and a surround sound system (Surround MAX) that actually delivers a surround sound effect.
Overall, with a price tag of £1,000 (more or less) and with the full features that it supports including the Full HD resolution, the LG 42LF66 is an excellent value for your money. It gives consumers strong performance in general areas, and given the price tag, definitely a great bargain.
