Microsemi announces new LCD technology for HDTV

Microsemi Corporation, the California-based manufacturer of integrated circuits and semiconductors, has announced chipset technology that could revolutionise LCD production.
According to Microsemi, LED based backlighting is the most important new technology in the LCD TV market, which is expected to grow by over 30% year on year.
The company’s new DAZL! (digital Advanced Lighting Zone) technology provides system level solutions that will accelerate the design of advanced LED-based backlighting for large screen LCD TVs.
LED based LCD TVs are in the early stages of development, they are expected to increasingly take share from CCFL based solutions.
According to the company the DAZL! chipsets can produce unprecedented colour-uniformity, brightness and contrast. They also provide smear free movement and energy saving advantages.
The chipsets could also lead to a 30% cut in price as they substantially reduce the number of components needed to build LED backlights. They also save significant board space.
A single chip can support up to 15 LEDs per cluster. This is more than double conventional solutions.
Samples of DAZL! Chipsets have already been shipped to flat panel TV manufacturers, with production volumes expected to start in early 2008.
