HDTV Set to Expand in 2009

Story link: HDTV Set to Expand in 2009 by Kathryn Lang

The fascination with HDTV continues to grow through out the world. With the United States set to switch to mandated digital broadcasting from the current analog in 2009, the numbers will continue to grow.

One of the main reasons for the current rise in HDTV interest is the prices. Consumers are eagerly grabbing up the HDTV sets that retailers are offering at drastically reduced prices. The sales of the sets are also improved by the quality of the HD picture and the size and shape of the sets themselves.

When the FCC mandate for HDTV takes affect in 2009, consumers will not be caught completely off guard. Starting in March of 2007, all television sets that are produced will have a built-in HDTV/DTV turner. The government will also be subsidizing the cost of “DTV Broadcast Converter” boxes for households with standard televisions.

The only hold up for the expansion of HDTV is the broadcasting. Most consumers who have purchased HDTV sets for the purpose of prime time viewing have been disappointed in the past.

Most programming that is currently offered is in the traditional analog. Many broadcasters have started the switch to HDTV, but for most consumers it is not happening as fast as it should.

With the success of the Super Bowl, which was broadcast in HDTV, is it likely that more companies will begin to move to HDTV before the FCC mandate has a chance to force the decision for them.

  1. DTV is not HDTV. The law that goes into effect in 2009 requires digital TV broadcasts (as opposed to analog). While it will likely increase the demand for HDTV broadcasts, it does not mandate HDTV broadcasts.
